Cowboys move into first

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team fired the low round of the day on Saturday to move to the top of the leaderboard through two rounds of action at the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club.

The Cowboys’ 6-under 274 bested the field by four shots and gave OSU a 6-under total of 554. Oklahoma stands in second place at 559 at the par-70, 7,289-yard layout. Arizona State finished the day in third place at 562, while Pepperdine claimed the No. 4 spot at 565.

“We made several double bogeys yesterday, so I think we’re just getting more used to the golf course and obviously the conditions in the morning are a little easier,” OSU head coach Alan Bratton said. “That’s why you play for a top seed like that and hopefully play well, so we get to go out early. Obviously, we’ll need to go out early again tomorrow. That’s big.”

Freshman Bo Jin tallied his fourth consecutive round in the 60s, firing a 65 to move to the top spot in the individual race. After opening with a 67, Jin’s 5-under tally during his second round put him three shots clear of the field at 132. The freshman carded the first of his seven birdies on the day at the third. After logging his lone bogey of his outward nine at the sixth, JIn countered with birdies at the seventh and the ninth to turn in 2-under 33.

He moved to 3-under with a birdie at the 650-yard, par-5 11th before notching his final bogey of the day at the 12th. He would close his round with three consecutive birdies to come home in 32 and post the lowest score by a Cowboy at the NCAA Championship since Charles Howell’s 63 in 2000.

Sophomore Eugenio Chacarra climbed closer to the top 10, posting a 69 to move 17 spots into a tie for 11th place at 1-under 139.

After opening with an even-par 70, freshman Brian Stark signed for a 71 to stand at 141 and tied for 19th place.

Junior Austin Eckroat bounced back from his opening 74 with a 69 of his own to climb 54 spots into a tie for 33rd place at 143.

Sophomore Aman Gupta carded his second consecutive 73 to get in with a 146 total and tied for 74th place.

The Cowboys will begin their third round tomorrow at 8:10 a.m. (CST) and will be grouped with Oklahoma and Arizona State.
