POTEAU – On a split vote, the Poteau School Board agreed to declare the sophomore wing of the high school as surplus and demolish it at Monday night’s monthly meeting.
A newly completed classroom building will replace the five classrooms to be removed. The sophomore wing is the part of the school with “barrel roof” construction.
Board member Earl Jobe voted against the move, saying he expected opposition from alumni.
Superintendent Don Sjoberg said the state fire marshal required that at least a portion of the building be removed when the new building was completed to allow access for the fire department. Sjoberg said removing the entire structure now would be more cost effective than doing it in stages.
