POTEAU – Poteau’s baseball team won its fifth straight regional tournament and qualified for the state tournament again with a 1-0 win over Grove Friday night.
The Pirates improve to 27-11. The Class 4A state tournament will be held at Shawnee High School for all three days. Poteau’s opponent and time will be announced Sunday or Monday.
Poteau swept its three games after defeating Perkins-Tryon and Hilldale Thursday. Grove qualified for the championship game with a 4-0 win over Hilldale earlier in the day.
The Pirates scored the game’s only run in the bottom of the fifth. Ben Brooks led off and reached on an error. After an out, Jagger Dill singled as Brooks advanced to third base.
Dax Collins walked to load the bases and Colton Williamson was hit by a pitch, bringing Brooks in with the go-ahead run.
Wesley Garrett got the win for Poteau, pitching all seven innings and only allowing three hits with 10 strikeouts and five walks.
Dill went 2-3 to lead the Pirates at the plate with Tucker Garrett getting Poteau’s other hit.
