POTEAU – Poteau won big in both its games Thursday in a Class 4A baseball regional tournament.
The Pirates opened with a 13-1 win over Perkins-Tryon before defeating Hilldale, 12-4, to move into Friday’s championship game at 6:30 p.m.
Poteau will play the winner of the Grove and Hilldale game, which is being played at 3:30 p.m. If the Pirates win the 6:30 game, they are returning to the state tournament. A loss would force an “if” game Saturday.
Hilldale defeated Grove in the opener, 5-4. Grove stayed alive with a 9-8 win over Perkins-Tryon.
Against Perkins-Tryon in the early game, Poteau scored a run in the first four innings before adding five in the fifth and four more in the fourth to get the run-rule win.
Ben Brooks was the winning pitcher for Poteau. He went four innings and gave up one hit with three strikeouts and two walks. Tucker Garrett threw one inning and gave up two hits and a run with a strikeout and two walks. Spencer Wells came in for the final inning and gave up a hit with two walks.
Jagger Dill tripled and was 3-5 with three runs and two RBI, Colton Williamson doubled and went 3-5, Jake Patterson had a 3-3 game with two RBI, Dax Collins doubled and had a 2-4 game with three RBI, Brooks doubled and finished 2-3 with three runs and a RBI, Champ Downs had a double in a 2-3 game with two RBI and two runs and Todd Mattox doubled and finished 1-3 with a RBI and a run

Against Hilldale, Poteau trailed 3-0 after three innings before taking the lead for good with four runs in the top of the fourth. Leading 6-4, the Pirates scored six runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
Caden Fox went all seven innings for Poteau, giving up seven hits and four runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and three walks.
Brooks doubled twice and was 2-2 with three runs and two RBI, Tucker Garrett doubled and went 2-3 with a RBI and run, Fox doubled and finished 1-4 with two RBI, Mattox had a double and went 1-4 with a run and a RBI and Williamson had a 1-4 outing with two RBI and two runs.
