SHAWNEE – Wister overcame an early 4-0 deficit to Sterling in a Class A state tournament quarterfinal game to win, 6-4, and advance to the semifinals Friday.
The fourth-ranked Wildcats are now 27-5 and plays Dewar (30-9) at 11 a.m. at Shawnee High School. Dewar, ranked 11th, knocked off No. 1 Canute in the early game Thursday, 4-1.
Fifth-ranked Sterling finishes with a 31-5 record.
Matt Holzhammer got the win in relief of Will Hammons. Hammons pitched 1.1 innings and gave up two hits and four runs, three earned, with a strikeout and two walks. Holzhammer pitched the final 5.2 innings and allowed two hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks.
Riley Crane doubled for Wister and was 2-3 with two RBI, Hammons went 2-4 with a RBI and a run and Isaac Carroll had a 2-3 game with two runs.
