2A state tournament starts Thursday

Howe Coach Chris Brown talks to his team during a timeout in a regional game at Howe

The Class 2A state basketball tournament is back, one year after the coronavirus basically killed the 2020 tournament.

The tournaments will be held at Noble for the girls and the historic State Fairground for the boys.

Both of the LeFlore County girls’ team will pair off in the first round at Noble while Howe’s boys play in the “big house”.

The bracket features a matchup of the two county girls’ teams to reach the tournament along with Howe’s boys getting a chance to play at the State Fairgrounds Arena.

Howe’s girls, which are 22-2 and ranked second, play county foe Pocola (17-6 and ranked eighth) at Noble Thursday at 4 p.m.

The two teams met in the LeFlore County Tournament finals Jan. 23 at Howe with the Lady Lions winning 72-48. Howe won an area championship Friday by defeating Hartshorne while Pocola won an area consolation championship with a blowout win over Fairland Saturday.

Howe’s boys (21-4 and ranked seventh) also won a consolation championship with a 47-45 win over Oklahoma Christian Academy Saturday night. The Lions play Cashion (21-3 and ranked fourth) Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the Fairgrounds Arena.
