POTEAU – Fire destroyed a historic house in Poteau shortly after midnight Christmas Eve, according to Poteau Fire Chief Jon Pickel.

The house was unoccupied but did have utilities, Pickel said. He said firefighters arrived to find “a massive amount of fire,” and were unable to save the structure.

He said the cause was under investigation. According to Pickel, the home in the 400 block of North Earl Street was built by the Lowrey family in the early 1900s. The family also built the old Lowrey Hotel, which now houses the LeFlore County Museum, and other buildings in the city.

“We lost an old relic,” he said.
